Woman opens her heart and home to children
“I first ask the parents if they need assistance when it comes to their children. It's just to keep them safe."
Ward councillor Charmain Kock has been involved in many community projects, but one that is especially close to her heart is a soup kitchen in Slovo.
Kock said she was blown away when she heard about the soup kitchen and how the founder, Letti Hoyi, cares for children on her premises while their parents are at work.
“I have been giving them food parcels, blankets and toys. I think what she is doing is pretty amazing. I have told her I will support her as long as I can,” said Kock, who added it is not about receiving glorification but giving back to the children of the community.

Hoyi said children have always been her passion and with this initiative, for which she receives no compensation, she just wanted to assist parents and keep children off the streets.
“I first ask the parents if they need assistance when it comes to their children. It’s just to keep them safe. I also help with homework.
“I also assist during the school holidays because parents go to work and you often find children are left alone, which can be unsafe,” said Hoyi.
She explained it is not a daycare centre, but rather a place where children can gather and have fun.

“I want them to grow up knowing of the influence of drugs and that children are getting kidnapped almost every day. I just want to teach them while they are still young about how important they are and for them to know what is right and wrong,” she said.
Hoyi would be grateful for any donations of toys, and food to cook for the children.
She is also looking for assistance with repairs to her home after it was damaged by rain.
It has been partially repaired, but more work needs to be done.
“I would like to give thanks to councillor Kock for always recognising and supporting our initiative,” said Hoyi.
