Mentoring junior doctors a highlight of retired surgeon’s career
Dr Edward Gama has retired after almost three decades of helping others.
After 27 years in the health sector, Dr Edward Gama from the Far East Rand Hospital has hung up his stethoscope.
The hospital bid the retiring surgeon farewell on April 22 at an event where speakers described him as a doctor dedicated to saving the lives of many.
Before joining Far East Rand Hospital, Gama worked at Charlotte Maxeke Academic Hospital and then joined the Chris Hani Baragwanath Hospital.

In September 2010, he joined the Far East Rand Hospital.
“I have worked well with all my colleagues in the surgical department at the Far East Rand Hospital. Working with my team in the operating theatre to give life and hope to the relatives of the patients was a pleasant fulfilment that I would never exchange for any other experience,” said Gama.

He described mentoring junior doctors as the highlight of his career in medicine.
Gama appreciated the support he received from his colleagues and hospital management.
