Springs business affected by sewage spill
A concerned resident and employee of a Springs business, claims to have observed severe sewage problems in and around town.
Celeste Snyman, a concerned resident and employee of a Springs business, claims to have observed severe sewage problems in and around town.
She said that over the past three weeks there have been numerous sewage problems at their business premises in the Springs CBD.
“Upon investigating and using our own plumbers we found that the cause of the problem was not on our premises but in the municipal system.
“We then, along with our plumbers, started phoning Ekurhuleni to report this issue where we had little to no success in getting hold of them.
“After numerous calls we managed to log a few calls. They came out assessed the situation and suctioned one of the drains,” she explained.
Snyman claims the same problem arose after a few days.
They contacted their own plumbers again, who told them the issue was municipal.
“We started phoning Ekurhuleni again and logged a call on April 25 and received a reference number.
“They again came out and assessed the situation. We also informed them of the drain that was overflowing in 12th Street and that there was no cover on the manhole on the corner of 12th Street and 5th Avenue.
“They came back and informed us that they found a cloth in the drain and that the problem should now be resolved,” said Snyman.

The Advertiser has received numerous complaints about the uncovered manhole on the corner of 12th Street and 5th Avenue.
Snyman claims they noticed the sewage overflowing again on April 29.
“The water was again pushing up in our toilets. On Saturday when passing our premises, we noticed a river of sewage running down the street.
“We did some further inspection and found our toilets overflowing into our offices and our courtyard flooded with raw sewage,” she said.
In an enquiry to the metro, the Advertiser asked what was causing the sewage to overflow in so many parts of Springs.

“The sewer line in 12th Street connects to the sewer line in 5th and then proceeds to 4th Avenue and Ermelo Road where it gravitates to the purification plant, a collectors line in the network” explained Zweli Dlamini, the metro’s spokesperson.
“It collects debris from the smaller lines enhancing the possibility of blockages more in the collectors line than in the smaller lines of the network.
“Another contributing factor is that manhole covers get stolen and rubbish gets thrown into it,”
He said the metro will enhance education to encourage the public not to throw foreign objects into the sewer infrastructure.
“We are rebuilding the manhole to mitigate part of the problem,” he added.
The turnaround time for complaints reported to the metro is 48 hours.
