Local runner sets his sights on cross-country competition

“I have benefited a lot from the sport. My health is looking sharp, I am fit, I can walk anywhere I want to and mentally as well I am strong.”

Champion runner Hendrik Booysen (65) has been involved in the sport since the age of six and is still going strong.
The Geduld resident said running is something that has kept him busy over the years and he is not planning on stopping anytime soon.
“I have been involved in the military for years and that is where the passion for running grew. I figured this is something I want to do the rest of my life when I saw a gap between leaving the military and running professionally,” said Booysens.
He told the Advertiser he fell in love with the sport for many reasons but believes he wouldn’t be in this world if it wasn’t for running.
“I have benefited a lot from the sport. My health is looking sharp, I am fit, I can walk anywhere I want to and I’m still mentally strong,” said Booysens.

He participated in provincial championships in Pretoria and placed second in the 400m and 800m sprint events.
“It was a tough competition against all the best runners but I was well prepared with hard training behind me. I believe what you put in is what you get out and that is why I came second and with a medal,” he said.
He is training for an upcoming cross-country competition to qualify for the SA Provincial Championships later this year and needs help.
“I do not have sponsorship for accommodation and transport to compete. I usually go to stores and to people to ask for any amount. Sometimes I sell artwork just to raise funds for me to get the amount I need to be able to pay. It will be a pleasure if people reach out to sponsor me however they can,” said Booysens.
His message to runners is that they must do it if they love it. In that way, there won’t be disappointments.
“If you dream about being the best, working hard will make your dream come true,” he said.
