Businesses are in the dark after a substation on Bell Street was vandalised on Friday morning.
“The last time this happened in April, we were without electricity for eight days. Everything is at a standstill. We can’t work, and it’s just frustrating,” explained Sunay Meadon from New Era Scrap.

It is unclear how much damage has been done to the infrustructure.

The company’s security guard walked in on the perpetrators while they were disconnecting cables after 06:00.
“He has minor injuries on his hands from fighting them off,” added Meadon.
The substation is next to New Era Scrap.
The culprits gained entry through the steel door and there are no other security measures.

“The substation is targeted by criminals who know there isn’t much security. The city needs to reinforce the security, as has been done at other substations,” explained Ward 74 Clr Thulane Simelane.
He said that some substations are fitted with security alarms and gates.
“We also need everyone to help us protect the infrastructure, because it belongs to all of us. We appreciate the businesses around here that keep an eye on it.
“If anyone from the community sees any suspicious behaviour around substations, they should report it to the police,” he added.
A case has been opened with the Springs SAPS.
