Couple celebrates emerald anniversary

Local couple has the secret to a successful marriage.

Paul (76) and Elize (72) Herbst from Springs celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary on June 11.
The elderly couple grew up together in the Agricultural Holdings in Endicott.
In their teen years, Paul meant to match his friend with Elize. However, the two realised they had feelings for each other and gave the relationship a go.
A year after dating, they tied the knot in 1966.
They have four children, nine grandchildren, and two great-grandchildren with a third one on the way.
They believe one needs to respect, listen and help each other as partners through all the seasons in life.
“It is very important to make quality time to spend with your loved ones. It’s not always easy but it’s possible. The keyword is endurance, so never give up no matter what,” they said.

Their children Tinka Joubert, Dot de Andrade, Paul Herbst and Lisa Coetzee say their parents have instilled many valuable lessons that have inspired them over the years.
“Our dad taught us that the only difference between a man’s and woman’s hands is the size. Other than that there is no difference.
“They have set an excellent example for the generation of perseverance, endurance and a spirit of never giving up after the first hurdle,” said Dot.
A valuable saying Paul taught his children is, ‘You are my friend made from iron and steel, regardless of where you live, even if you are drunk on the street, you will stay my friend.’
