Residents gather for a service delivery and crime issue meeting

Clr Thulani told residents that the City of Ekurhuleni is currently facing problems with waste trucks that have broken down, but they are working hard to resolve the issue.

A community meeting was held by the Wright Park CPF on October 16 to discuss service delivery and crime issues.

Sitting in with the residents were Ward 74 Clr Thulani Simelane, Bongani Klass from the City of Ekurhuleni’s energy department and Zacharia Mojalefa from the city’s finance department.

Mojalefa advised residents to adapt to the new technology that requires them to take their water readings before the fourth of every month using the My CoE app and not to depend on the water meter readers.

“Although there are senior citizens who do not have access or may struggle to use the application, I highly advise them to make use of our offices to make arrangements for their municipality accounts.

“We are willing to assist any resident who will supply us with a photo of their water readings and their house number,” said Mojalefa.

Klaas further warned residents not to bridge electricity but rather to use electricity wisely and effectively due to the cost of living being too high.

He issued pamphlets to residents which showed the different electricity tariffs and how they are charged by the municipality.

“Ekurhuleni is getting away with the old electricity conversion system and we are installing electricity prepaid meters to all houses.

“This will be done so that it will be easier for households to monitor and use their electricity wisely,” said Klaas.

Chairperson of Wright Park CPF, Arles Baloyi, who gave the residents a brief overview of crime statistics, said the current high crimes in the area are theft of street light cables and smash-and-grabs.

“Smash-and-grabs happen a lot between 6:00 and 20:00. This is where women with children are more vulnerable to this crime.

“Residents must refrain from walking in quiet places as they are subject to being robbed during daylight,” said Arles.

Thulani hopes to host such meetings in all areas within Ward 74 where all residents may engage and be informed. He informed the residents to work together with the metro to solve issues they encounter.
