Bakerton residents find sewage leak on First Avenue unbearable

January woes don't seem to end for the residents of Bakerton as they have been 'bathed' in the stench of the sewage for nearly the entire month.

Bakerton residents are outraged due to spending nearly the entire January ‘drowning’ in sewage.

They have been tolerating unbearable conditions the clogged pipes have caused by letting sewage spill onto the streets and past neighbouring yards.

The leak originates from outside the Bakerton Library on First Avenue.

Vasuthaven Moodley is a concerned resident whose home has turned into a nesting area for bacteria and flies due to the problem that has been persisting.

Moodley raised his concerns to the Springs Advertiser after having complained on January 16 to the city about the leak and horrible stench that have now invaded his home on Orchard Road.

“The sewage water is attracting flies and other insects and we have to drive over this sewage water daily which messes up my driveway and yard. This is a serious health hazard,” said Moodley.

He lodged various complaints with the city but felt like his cries were landing on deaf ears.

“The sewer water has turned green, and the odour is unbearable,” he said.

Moodley is not the only one to complain.

Fatima Mayere walks past the leak on her way to work in the mornings.

“The smell is unbearable and walking past it makes me feel sick. I hope they do something about it,” she complained.

According to the City of Ekurhuleni, the municipality is in the process of obtaining the services of a jet truck to clear the blockage.

A team attended to the complaint but was unable to clear the blockage with handheld rods.
