Young woman shot and killed during robbery in Everest

The 22-year-old was shot by three armed intruders during a robbery that happened in one of the shacks rented by tenants in her parents' yard.

A 22-year-old woman was killed during a house robbery in the Everest informal settlement on January 30.

According to Springs SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Themba Tshabalala, three men who moved into a rented shack in the backyard on January 24 were in possession of a large sum of money after selling gold to a buyer.

On the evening of the shooting, the men were awakened from sleep by three armed intruders who kicked down the door to gain entry into the shack and demanded money.

Tshabalala said when the men did not cooperate, one of the intruders shot one of the men three times in the legs.

The men then handed over the money to the intruders.

“The owners of the premises were woken up by the commotion outside. Upon investigating, they were threatened by the armed intruders who fired one shot into the shack, killing their daughter,” said Tshabalala.

“The intruders fled the scene on foot.”

The deceased was declared dead on the scene. She sustained a single bullet wound to her right upper body.

SAPS seized one live round of 9mm ammunition and five empty cartridges. Police nabbed three suspects, two men and a woman, on January 30.

They were arrested for murder, attempted murder, house robbery and possession of unlicensed firearms. They appeared in the Springs Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
