Young cub claws way to top

Seven-year-old Joshua Swanepoel is the first meerkat boy to earn a gold star at Springs Central Air Group, which is the top award for meerkats.

Seven-year-old Joshua Swanepoel is the first Meerkat (junior category of the Scouts) from Springs Central Air Group to earn a gold star.

It is the highest award in the Meerkat division, and Joshua received it last month.

“Our Meerkat group opened in August when Joshua was six years old. He worked hard the last six months to get the highest award before he turned seven on February 1,” said Den Scouter Nicole Swanepoel.

Joshua’s parents, who are also active members of the Scouts, are proud of their son.

When asked how he felt about getting this award, Joshua smiled and responded, “I feel happy and excited.”

He also spoke about what he loves to do and what the Scouts have taught him.

“I learn how to make things. It’s a lot of fun, and I make new friends. I also like getting badges.”

When Joshua is not at school or Scouts, he is active at home.

“I like racing and kicking a ball around and playing leapfrog.”

Joshua has climbed the ranks and is now a Cub in the organisation. He is also one of the youngest in his new division.

“We wish him all the best in achieving his leaping wolf badge, the highest award in cubs,” said Swanepoel.
