Couple celebrates golden anniversary

Derrick (72) and Frankie (69) van Tonder tied the knot 50 years ago on July 7, 1973.

Derrick (72) and Frankie (69) van Tonder met on a school bus in their high school years, and 50 years later, the rest is history.

After getting married on July 7, 1973, in Port Elizabeth, the couple relocated to Springs in 1980.

They have two daughters, Denise Sboro and Avril Thompson, who are also happily married. Both have blessed their parents with two grandchildren, Tamsyn and Alice.

Denise said her parents have a simple love while maintaining their marriage secret of unconditional love.

“Mom has been home most of the time looking after the family, cooking, making lunches, and cleaning, while my dad worked most of his life to support the family,” said Denise.

“They are both homebodies, and my mom loves baking.”

The couple likes to go away occasionally to have a break from staying at home and even travelled to the USA to visit their one grandchild.

They also enjoy sitting on their patio and looking at the birds while having a home-cooked breakfast.

Denise and her sister believe their parents have achieved all their wishes and dreams together.

“We wish them a blessed anniversary, and may they live long enough to see their 60th wedding anniversary.”
