EMPD tip of the week

Public implored to use dumping sites and not illegally dispose of waste.

Illegal dumping, also known as fly dumping, can be described as the unlawful dumping of any waste.

Some individuals, not in favour of utilising authorised dumping sides provided to them by the City of Ekurhuleni, resort to illegal dumping which is not healthy for the environment.

Some of the effects of illegal dumping are:

• Increase in health problems due to air pollution around the area as well as viral diseases from infected animals like rats.

• Properties in the vicinity lose value due to poor living conditions.

• Contamination of soil and water, which could lead to pollution of water resources and infertility of the land.

• Possible natural disasters because some chemical waste can be flammable and cause fires. The city and EMPD appeal to members of the public to use municipal dumping sites.

Members of the community are urged to keep the environment clean and safe. Report incidents of illegal dumping to the municipality on 086 453 000. Offenders may be fined R2 000.

• Information supplied by EMPD media liaison officer Constable Deliwe Ndlovu.
