WATCH: Famous landmark meets a fiery end

The windmill at Windmill Park caught alight on Monday afternoon.

This is a sad demise for the beloved windmill that has stood tall as an attraction and landmark in Springs since the 1960s.

It is alleged someone set a homeless man’s belongings on fire with the aim of getting rid of the individual residing within the structure.

The structure’s frame is made of wood, which soon caught alight. The fire quickly progressed, burning the entire structure.

First on the scene were patrollers from a local security company, who called emergency services.

The fire department arrived on the scene and contained the fire.

The windmill was previously restored in 2012 through a collaboration of various corporate and private sponsors.
