Ekurhuleni District cross border roadblock a success

The Interprovincial Roadblock was conducted along the N12 bordering Mpumalanga and the Gauteng province-Springs area.

In a combined effort, the EMPD conducted an interprovincial roadblock on the N12 bordering Gauteng in the Springs area and Mpumalanga on Friday.

Gauteng Traffic Police, Mpumalanga Traffic Police, Gauteng crime prevention traffic wardens, Department of Home Affairs Immigration, SAPS and other law enforcement agencies were part of the operation.

The roadblock was part of a festive season operation in an effort to promote safety on the roads during and beyond the holidays.

Suspects found in possession of counterfeit goods were arrested.

The aim was to check for compliance on motorists, passengers and vehicles, respectively, and also check for roadworthiness of vehicles and drivers’ fitness.

EMPD spokesperson Lieutenant Colonel Kelebogile Thepa said during the operation 946 vehicles were stopped, 50 written summonses were issued, 32 undocumented immigrants were arrested, and one unlicensed firearm was recovered.

“Suspects were nabbed for possession of counterfeit goods smuggled from Mozambique to South Africa,” said Thepa.

EMPD commissioner Isaac Mapiyeye led the operation.

Thepa added that EMPD Commissioner Isaac Mapiyeye applauded the excellent work conducted by law enforcement officials.

“Mapiyeye gave a stern warning to those who will be partaking in criminal activities that the ever-ready authorities will stop at nothing to bring the perpetrators to book and face the full might of the law.

“Heightened operations will be conducted throughout the city, and collaborative efforts from law enforcement in enhancing the fight against criminality will be executed without fear or favour,” she said.
