Probe after resident finds dead newborn in Reedville
The body of a newborn girl was found dumped in an open field in Reedville on Sunday afternoon.
The Springs SAPS opened an inquest for investigation after a newborn baby was found near a substation on Porta Nova Street in Reedville on Sunday.
The discovery happened when a resident in the area stumbled on the abandoned infant’s body while disposing of grass cuttings in the open field.
SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Themba Tshabalala said the resident reported a foul smell coming from close to where he stood.
“Upon further inspection, he saw a plastic bag with two legs protruding and called the CPF,” said Tshabalala.
The discovery was made at about 14:30. Tshabalala said the EMS confirmed that the body was a female infant of about 6 to 10 days old.
Anyone who can help the police trace the mother of the infant or might be suspicious of any female who gave birth with no sign of a child can contact the Springs SAPS on 011 365 5700.
