Long arm of the law catches up with fake cop

After posing as police officers during a house robbery on March 15, one of the two robbers was arrested in the Springs CBD.

The Springs SAPS has arrested one of the two men who pretended to be police officers during a house robbery in Springs CBD on March 15.

According to SAPS spokesperson Sergeant Themba Tshabalala, the accused, who appeared in court on March 19, was charged with robbery and impersonating a police officer.

“The owner said the robbers told him and his roommate that they were police officers and demanded their firearms and cellphones, further threatening to shoot them if they did not comply.

“The robbers placed them in the corner of the room while searching through their belongings and bags,” said Tshabalala.

Among the items stolen were a laptop, four cellphones, a hard drive, two power banks, bags, a solar torch and cash (R5 640), as well as unknown property from the roommate.

Tshabalala added that the assailants robbed three other tenants in the house of their personal belongings before fleeing the scene.

“The five housemates, who had been locked in one of the rooms, managed to get out.”

Tshabalala says one of the housemates was able to recognise one of the robbers and directed the crime prevention wardens where to find him. He was apprehended and detained at the Springs Police Station after being found at a nearby location.
