Detective praised for successful conviction

The 17-year-old victim was raped and assaulted in 2019.

The Springs Family Violence, Child Protection Service and Sexual Offences (FCS) Unit applauded investigating officer Detective Constable Thembile Gunxwana for securing life imprisonment for Mandla Dungu Sibiya (33).

Sibiya was sentenced by the Tsakani Magistrate’s Court on March 26 to life and 12 months imprisonment for raping and assaulting a 17-year-old girl.

The incident happened on March 16, 2019, in Tsakani Ext 17, where the girl stayed in a backyard room in a rented space with her mother.

Ekurhuleni district spokesperson Captain Neldah Sekgobela said Sibiya approached the girl and told her to keep the doors closed because people would rape her.

“As she stood up to close the door, Sibiya grabbed her, assaulted her with a pot to the face, and raped her,” said Sekgobela.

“The docket was opened at the Tsakane SAPS and allocated to Gunxwana, who made sure all those affected by the case breathed a sigh of relief when Sibiya was found guilty.”
