Ipid investigates arrest of two cops accused of kidnapping in Springs

Two Midway Highway Patrol police officers will appear at the Springs Magistrate's Court on August 14 on alleged kidnapping and extortion charges.

Two police officers are scheduled to appear before the Springs Magistrate’s Court on Wednesday for a formal bail application, following allegations of kidnapping and extortion.

Phaladi Shuping, spokesperson for the Independent Police Investigative Directorate (Ipid), confirmed the officers are accused of kidnapping a man in Springs.

According to Shuping, the officers allegedly instructed the man to enter their vehicle, then drove off after accusing him of involvement in illegal mining.

“The officers are also accused of allegedly handing the man over to Basotho nationals, who initially demanded a ransom of R2m for his release,” said Shuping.
