Teamwork leads to successful arrest

A suspected car thief was nabbed during a crime prevention operation on August 3.

A collaborative crime prevention operation led by Springs SAPS, CPF, and local security companies resulted in the arrest of a suspected car thief in the Springs CBD on August 3.

The operation, initiated on short notice by Captain Wynand du Toit, focused on preventing vehicle theft at a local school due to a recent spike of vehicle thefts at sporting events.

According to Sergeant Themba Tshabalala, Springs SAPS communications officer, during the operation, a Kia Sonet was seen entering the parking area and parking next to a white Fortuner.

“The occupants of the Kia acted suspiciously, prompting the team to check the vehicle’s details, which did not match the registration,” said Tshabalala,

“The suspects, who were unsettled, attempted to flee but they were intercepted by a marked SAPS vehicle.”
Tshabalala added that while one suspect managed to escape, another was apprehended.

The arrested man was found in possession of a signal jammer, a car key coder, various computer boxes, a bag full of car-breaking tools, and a handbag containing items stolen from a different scene.
