Ekurhuleni district Essential Infrastructure Unit Detective Sergeant Busisiwe Mahlangu of the Springs SAPS was recently commended for her efforts to secure three convictions.
Mahlangu investigated a case in August 2023 in which the accused pulled overhead Transnet wires, which were cut into pieces, valued at about R60 000.
The Springs Regional Magistrate Court found him guilty and sentenced him to 10 years imprisonment. In the second case, the accused, Bafana Mzima, stole copper cables valued at R100 000 from a railway line.
He was one of two men found trying to sell Transnet’s earthing copper cables in Slovo Park on March 17.
He was found with 30 earthing copper cables, a hacksaw, a bag containing gloves, a shifting spanner, a screwdriver and a vice grip spanner.

He received eight years imprisonment for stealing ferrous and non-ferrous metals.
Ekurhuleni district spokesperson Captain Neldah Sekgobela said that, in the third case, Mahlangu secured a 10-year imprisonment for the accused for cable theft.
“The accused was found inside a substation, screaming for help, while his feet were burnt by electric cables last November,” said Sekgobela.
