Ignite the flame of aviation with SAMAA

Established in August 1937, the South African Model Aircraft Association has evolved into a premier organisation promoting the art, craft, sport and recreation of model aviation.

The South African Model Aircraft Association (SAMAA), located in Parkdene, Boksburg, is a cornerstone of the model aviation community in SA, and it invites all enthusiasts to take an exciting journey into the world of aviation.

Established in August 1937, the SAMAA has evolved into a premier organisation promoting the art, craft, sport and recreation of model aviation.

Chairperson Alec Groenewald said model aviation is an exceptional introduction to aviation for children as young as six years old.

“By the time these kids turn 18, they possess a wealth of aviation knowledge, making careers in the industry more accessible and rewarding.

Bob Skinner (general manager), Linda Dold (administrator) and Alec Groenewald (chairperson).

“Model aviation offers children hands-on opportunities to explore aviation principles, sparking curiosity and creativity while instilling practical skills.

“For parents, this activity is a meaningful way to steer their children toward a positive and productive future, countering the passive engagement often associated with video games.”

Alec further explained the SAMAA began with a focus on free flight and control line activities, which dominated the model aviation scene until the mid-1950s.

“The introduction of radio control activities in 1958 marked a turning point, necessitating the creation of a dedicated body to oversee competitive events. In 1986, the association unified all model aviation activities under its banner.

“Today, it is recognised as an approved Aviation Recreational Organisation by the South African Civil Aviation Authority, underscoring its commitment to safety and regulated practices.”

Why join the SAMAA?

The SAMAA offers a range of benefits to its members, including:
• advice and guidance: Support on the technical and legislative aspects of aeromodelling;

Igniting the flame of aviation

The SAMAA’s motto, Igniting the flame of aviation, reflects its mission to inspire and nurture the next generation of aviation enthusiasts.

According to Groenewald, model aviation is more than a pastime; it is a stepping stone into the aviation industry, opening doors to limitless possibilities.
