Meet the committee: a look at the people behind the Indoor Mining and Military Museum

The indoor museum serves as an extension for the smaller collection of the outdoor museum.

The Springs Indoor Mining and Military Museum is a venture that brings excitement to the town. With its impending launch date, it has announced the committee members who will assist in different ways to ensure its success and continued service to the community at large.

DJ Goosen is one of the committee members and curators whose passion lies with the outdoor museum. DJ remarks how he was always meant to be in the military since he was a small boy.

“Even now as a veteran, I never rest because my passion lies within the military and the life it gave me.”

Speaking on the importance of the museum, he emphasises the need for the youth to know.

“I love teaching young people as they are the future of this country. When we first started on this journey, Tony (da Cruz), Errol (Brits) and myself, I knew that I wanted to pass my love and knowledge to the young people.”

DJ also says it is important to create meaningful relationships with the people who come to visit the museums.

“People who feel appreciated return for more than the experience, they come because they and their children love it.”

He mentions with jest that his loving wife understands his passions.

“You will find her waiting for me long after closing time because I am having endless conversations and telling stories to the visitors.

“That’s part of the job. The reward isn’t in the money because we do it for free, the reward is in seeing faces come alive with the stories we tell them.”
