Scam alert: Ekurhuleni residents advised to avoid fake electricity offers

The City of Ekurhuleni warns residents against social media scammers selling fake discounted electricity tokens, urging purchases only from approved vendors to avoid financial loss.

The City of Ekurhuleni urges residents to be on the lookout for scammers who claim to be selling the city’s electricity at a lower price.

It has been brought to the city’s attention that the criminals are operating on social media where these scammers deceive residents by offering them electricity tokens at a substantially discounted rate.

Residents are encouraged to be vigilant and only purchase prepayment electricity from reputable City of Ekurhuleni approved service providers/vendors, a full list of which is available on the city’s website at www.ekurhuleni.gov.za

It should be noted that any electricity units bought via this scam will not be accepted by the city’s prepayment electricity meters and customers will lose their hard earned money in the process.

The city, through its energy department and EMPD, is following leads on these scammers and hopes to make a breakthrough soon.

Anyone with information that can lead to the arrest and successful prosecution of these scammers may contact the nearest police station or the city on 0860 543 000.
