Goal getter Elena shoots for her dreams

With determination and skill, this 11-year-old netball star is on the rise.

Elena Helberg (11) is a netball wonder and her parents’ pride and joy. This goal defender from Laerskool Jan Van Riebeek was chosen among her peers to be part of the Gauteng netball team.

Her mother Eldie, says she is proud as her daughter is part of the 2% of all netball players to be chosen for this honour.

“We are so proud of her and grateful to God for giving her the talent to do anything she puts her mind to.”

Eldie continues saying that any moment Elena achieves, those things she works hard for, make her proud.

“We shared the news with family and friends. When we heard, we felt proud that she would be part of the Gauteng team. There were tears of joy. ”

It was a pleasant surprise for her family, as Elena was not interested in netball until recently.

“For a girl who has only been playing the sport for three years, and to achieve something with hard work and dedication is incredible.”

Elena has been over the moon since she heard the news, and some days she feels it is all a dream.

“Not just for the games, but to meet new friends and to be part of something great.”

She has a bright future, as her loved ones continue to support her passions.

“She has opened many doors for herself in her future as a netball player, and maybe one day she will teach girls also to play netball.”

There are plenty of opportunities for Elena.

“She has been chosen to play for the Blue Bulls Mini Daisies U13 rugby team. They start practice in July. And if she is good enough, they will pull her to the U14 team. With netball, she will play harder to go further in the future.”
