Springs senior ladies crochet to keep the cold away

The Golden Girls appealed to the community to assist with donations to help them pay rent at the venue where they meet weekly.

A group of senior ladies are stepping up to bring warmth to those in need this winter by donating handmade beanies, blankets and scarves.

Formed in 2013, the Golden Girls began as a support group to foster friendship and uplift one another through weekly gatherings.

Over time, their bond blossomed into a mission of compassion, leading them to use their crocheting skills to make a difference.

The ladies will donate 193 handmade beanies, six blankets and eight scarves to bring warmth to vulnerable community members.

The beneficiaries of this initiative will be New Image Rover Crew an NPO based in Daggafontein, Full Gospel Church in Bakerton and Cornerstone Church in Geduld.

“When we started meeting, we wanted the elderly ladies to have a place to get together. We would prepare meals for one another and have lunch.

“We then decided to give back to the community by crafting these handmade items,” Saras Ramsammy, the Golden Girls founder and chairperson said.

The ladies meet at Bakerton Community Hall every Wednesday. Their oldest member, Moothal Moonsamy, is 93 years old.

“Moothal enjoys the weekly get-togethers so much that she never wants to leave.”

Golden Girls, Lilly Moodley and Papu Kooppsamy are 81 and 89 years old, respectively.

“The ladies are awesome. They have the most amazing personalities and unique qualities. We learn from the older ladies. Next year we are starting to make aprons,” Ramsammy explained.

“We love gathering and coming up with new ways to better people’s lives. I cannot describe the feeling of being able to give back to someone in need; it feels like we are looking out for our own families. My dream for these ladies is for them to see beautiful places all over the country, to take trips and just be happy, ” she said.

She appealed to the community to assist them with donations to help pay the rent of the hall.

“We each have to contribute money to keep meeting here and it would help us if we could be assisted with donations to ease the burden and continue initiatives like this one and help those in need,” she added.

Anyone willing to donate can contact Ramsammy on 073 374 1660.
