Vervet monkey spotted in Modder East: SPCA urges public not to interfere

The SPCA has urged the community to contact them on 082 668 5230 if they spot the monkey.

A vervet monkey was seen in Modder East, on Outeniqua Road, yesterday afternoon (June 5) at approximately 15:55.

Springs SPCA manager Annecia le Roux said the SPCA is monitoring the situation closely.

“Wildlife authorities are aware and have been monitoring the monkey. We urge the community to leave the animal alone. Crowds will stress it and may cause it to behave unpredictably. Please do not attempt to capture or kill it — leave that to the experts,” she said.

Le Roux also advised residents not to feed the monkey, as this encourages it to remain in the area.

“Feeding it gives it a reason to stay,” she explained.

Anyone who spots the monkey is asked to contact the SPCA on 082 668 5230 and send a pin location of where it was last seen.
