City warns residents to use heaters safely this winter

As winter sets in, the DEMS urges residents to use heaters and open flames with care to prevent house fires and carbon monoxide poisoning.

As temperatures drop, the city’s DEMS urges residents to stay alert and practice fire safety at home.

Emergency services remain on high alert as more households turn to heaters and other appliances to stay warm. While these help fight the cold, the DEMS warns they pose serious fire risks if used improperly.

“Knowing how to protect yourself, your loved ones, and your property can make all the difference,” said DEMS spokesperson William Ntladi.

To help residents stay safe this winter, the DEMS shared these safety tips:

Heating safety tips:
• Use heating appliances with extra care;

• Keep flammable items at least 1m from heaters;

• Refill paraffin heaters and lamps only when they are cold. Hot fuel can ignite;

• Don’t use cooking stoves to heat rooms;

• Never leave heaters unattended, especially around children.

• If using a brazier (imbawula), ensure the area is well ventilated. These devices can release deadly gases like carbon monoxide and hydrogen cyanide. Avoid using them indoors if possible.

In an emergency, call 011 458 0911 from a landline or 112 from a cellphone.
