Olympia Park pool crumbles as city confirms no budget for repairs
A full rebuild is needed to restore the historic Springs facility, but the City of Ekurhuleni says there's no funding or private interest yet.
The City of Ekurhuleni has confirmed there is no budget to fix the Olympia Park swimming pool. This follows an article in last week’s Advertiser, ‘Springs’ Olympia Park Pool lies in ruins after a decade of neglect’.
CoE spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said the city received a report from a consultant who recommended a total rebuild of the swimming pool.
He also said that the rebuild would require a large budget, which has not been allocated so far, as the city is rebuilding its financial base.
Dlamini added that the city has not received any offers from private companies interested in rehabilitating public facilities.
When asked about the rehabilitation plan in 2021, Dlamini said the budget allocated in 2015 was redirected to other projects that needed extra funding. As a result, no budget was allocated in 2021.
He said that the city has 24-hour security stationed at the swimming pool and that members of the public are not allowed into the facility.
