Laerskool Werda learners bring hope with generous donation to local soup kitchen

Laerskool Werda learners collected food and toiletries for a local soup kitchen and the response was bigger than anyone expected.

In a heartwarming gesture of kindness, Laerskool Werda learners donated food items and toiletries to the Greater Springs soup kitchen on August 5.

The learners contributed a variety of food items, including rice, maize meal, canned food, and more. They also donated toiletries such as toilet rolls, toothpaste, and sanitary towels.

One of the teachers, Mabatho Mtshali, said they were surprised at the amount of donations they received from the learners.

“When the learners saw everything combined, they were quite emotional and even offered to donate more. We believe this initiative will inspire them to launch similar efforts on their own,” she said.

Mtshali added that the donation is in line with the school’s dedication to uplifting the community.

“As a school, we want to make a difference, and because we know the soup kitchen feeds the community, we are happy to be a part of this initiative,” she said.

The soup kitchen’s founder, Franci Swanepoel, was emotional as she described how surprised she was at the magnitude of the donation.

“I am overwhelmed by this kindness, and I wish more people would open their hearts to help the needy. So many people have asked me for food parcels and it broke my heart to tell them I didn’t have any. Now I will be able to prepare food parcels for them,” Swanepoel said.

She thanked the school for its generosity.
