Heritage in Harmony: Local artist shares on music and culture

As Heritage Month unfolds, singer-songwriter Geraldine du Preez reflects on how music connects us to our roots, preserves tradition, and celebrates the diverse culture of Springs.

As the country celebrates Heritage Month, citizens are reminded of the vital role artistry plays in honouring diverse cultures, and the individuals who use their voices, hands, and time to preserve history.

The Springs Advertiser asked singer and songwriter Geraldine du Preez what heritage means to her as an artist. Born and raised in Springs, Geraldine, from a young age, never missed an opportunity to grab a microphone.

She opened shows for artists like Dozi and Bok van Blerk, experiences which she said opened more doors for her.

“I had the privilege of meeting and working with people from diverse backgrounds, which has enriched my artistry. Every time I step on stage, I carry my culture with me.

“I celebrate my heritage by proudly sharing it with others so people can feel the heartbeat of my background through my voice,” she said.

She added Heritage Day is a reminder that music connects people to their history.

“It is a day that unites us. In a world that is always changing, music protects traditions and passes down values in a way that words alone cannot,” Geraldine said.

Geraldine shared exciting news about a new song that she is currently writing with The Hope and Harmony group.

“Springs, this Heritage Day let’s sing louder, dance prouder, and celebrate the beauty of who we are together,” she said.
