Bert Collins Boxing Club shines in Kimberley tournament
Springs boxers brought home wins and experience, with knockout performances that had the Kimberley crowd on its feet.
Bert Collins Boxing Club represented the Springs community at a boxing tournament held in Kimberley, Northern Cape, on September 20.
Head coach Jeanette Dyzel shared the highlights with Springs Advertiser. Five of the club’s boxers travelled, with four going into the ring and gaining more experience.
JT Mienie climbed into the ring against Kganya Seane from Thapelo’s Boxing Club from the Northern Cape. Dyzel said that Mienie set the tone for the day.
She also said that he fought with courage and determination, proving what he was made of and breaking the ice for the rest of the team. He won on a 3/0 points decision.
Tristen van Tonder was up against Cayleb Ryland from Rusty’s from Kimberley. The head coach shared that Van Tonder displayed great skill and was ahead on points, but unfortunately, his head was not fully in the game, which cost him the match in ABD. This was his first loss after five previous wins.
Jacobus Jonker’s fight was cancelled due to mismatches. Mohammed Ngcobo was up against Muqtadir Steenkamp from Rusty’s.
“He once again proved why he was declared the winner on a KO in round one, with a big heart and unwavering spirit,” said Dyzel.
Dyzel said that Blessing Taguma impressed the crowd by outboxing his opponent and finishing the fight within 20 seconds in the first round as well.
She added that Taguma had all the spectators behind him, and he did not disappoint with his speed and power to end the bout within seconds.
The head coach said, “We are proud of all our boxers for their hard work, sportsmanship, and the heart they showed in Kimberley. This tournament has not only boosted their confidence but also inspired the community to continue supporting local boxing.”
The club is hosting a fun-filled programme for all our graded and non-graded boxers. The next tournament will be held on October 4 at 2128 Javelin Road, Geduld.
The club also trains on Mondays, Tuesdays and Thursdays from 18:00 to 20:00. For those interested, WhatsApp Dyzel on 069 207 9481.
