Ekurhuleni keeps water use below target for six months

With daily water use averaging 987,703 litres, the metro urges residents to keep saving as warmer days set in.

The City of Ekurhuleni has maintained an average water consumption of 987 703 litres per day over the last six months that is below the city’s licence target of 1 022 000 litres per day.

This makes the city a leading water champions in Gauteng with the abovementioned stable water consumption since March.

CoE has expressed gratitude to residents and businesses that adhered to the city’s water conservation efforts, including the Level 1 water restrictions that were declared last year to retain a sustainable water supply.

Residents are encouraged to continue to use water sparingly amid warmer temperatures and reminded of the Level 1 water restrictions below:

1. Watering of gardens is restricted between 6:00 and 18:00.

2. Use of hosepipes or sprinklers for cleaning driveways/sidewalks is prohibited; residents should use brooms or buckets instead.

3. Use of a hosepipe to wash cars is prohibited.

4. Use of potable/municipal water to fill swimming pools is prohibited.

Below are additional water-saving tips to keep in mind:
• Limit showers to under five minutes and avoid filling bathtubs;
• Install water-efficient taps and showerheads;
• Water gardens only before 06:00 or after 18:00 to reduce evaporation;
• Run dishwashers and washing machines only with full loads;
• Avoid using hosepipes to wash cars or paved areas – use buckets instead;
• Fix leaking taps, toilets, and pipes promptly.

The metro added that residents should report damaged water meters, water leaks and burst pipes to the city for urgent intervention. Reporting can be through the call centre at 0860 543 000 or the My CoE App.

Alternatively, residents can contact the call centre via their social media handles @CoE_Call_Centre or email call.centre@ekurhuleni.gov.za.
