Springs history: Revisiting the 1995 final edition of the Advertiser

Go back in time. The December 22, 1995, Springs and Brakpan Advertiser was packed with local heroes, social bowls, and community legends. See the top stories.

The December 22 final edition of the 1995 Springs and Brakpan Advertiser was filled with wonderful stories. Here are some of the stories that were featured:

The leading story on the front page was ‘Brave woman is recovering at mom’s home’, where one woman was stabbed to death in Daggafontein with another badly wounded. The woman who survived fled the home with her child and was helped by a neighbour.

‘Cellphone for Selcourt’ was a story about Stop Selcourt Crime buying a cellphone that was used by the police while patrolling as one of the ways to fight crime.

Do you remember when Springs residents had to vote for the stars of the community? Back then people were nominated for achievments in sport, entertainment, public service and newsmaking and were voted for by the community – even readers had a chance to win prizes.

Weddings from Springs and Brakpan used to be part of the edition throughout the year and every bride wanted to be a bride of the month.

Remember Annie ‘Auntie’ Nyathela, who was Springs’ deputy mayor? Well, she outlined her future plans for the area. She said she wanted to make Springs a better town for residents.

In the sport section, social bowls were one of the activities that kept people entertained with teams from Impala, Springs Old Boys, Springs Town and Springswood competing.

The back page featured an intense outdoor wrestling match that had everybody cheering, which was held on Voortrekker Street in Brakpan.
