Springs police arrest two for possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition

A tip-off led Springs SAPS to recover an unlicensed pistol hidden under a couch, while another suspect was arrested for possession of ammunition during patrols on the same day.

A man was arrested in Springs Extension on January 19 for being in possession of an unlicensed firearm.

Springs SAPS received a tip-off about a firearm at a property in Springs Extension, one of the town’s hijacking hotspots.

According to police spokesperson Sergeant Charity Zwane, officers found a man and a woman at the property and searched them, but found nothing.

“Police then searched the house and discovered a black plastic bag containing a pistol hidden under a couch along with seven rounds of ammunition,” Zwane said.

The man allegedly claimed he was using the firearm for self-protection but failed to produce a valid firearm license.

He was then arrested and detained at Springs Police Station.

In a separate incident on the same day, police were patrolling the Never Never informal settlement when they noticed a group of men who fled upon seeing the officers.

“One man was apprehended and searched. He was found in possession of eight rounds of ammunition and was arrested. The ammunition was booked in as evidence,” Zwane said.
