Community effort brings iconic Impala aircraft back to life

The South African Air Force Impala MK1 on display at the Springs Mine and Military Museum has been fully refurbished, thanks to the voluntary efforts of local panel beaters Decore Auto Body.

The South African Air Force Impala MK1 currently on display at the Springs Mine and Military Museum (Springs MMM) has been fully refurbished.

Last year, a local panel beater, Decore Auto Body, volunteered to restore the Impala, one of the centrepieces at the local museum.

The Impala was initially manufactured in Italy and was donated by the Swartkop Air Force Museum on August 13, 2025.

The museum’s founder, Tony da Cruz, said the markings and roundels will be painted on by the Springs MMM staff.

“We thank Gerrie Jacobs and his team for the weeks of inside work to make this heritage SAAF aircraft beautiful again,” Da Cruz said.
