UPDATE: Three arrested for illegal mining in Payneville

A week-long gold rush at a Payneville kraal led to arrests following a co-ordinated law enforcement operation.

Three people were arrested for illegal mining in Payneville, Gugulethu Section, during a joint operation by the SAPS, the EMPD and the city yesterday (February 19).

The operation followed illegal mining activities at a cattle kraal in the area, which started last week.

“Spades, wheelbarrows, water pumps and hammers were seized,” said provincial police spokesperson Colonel Dimakatso Nevhuhulwi.

People began their search after traces of gold were allegedly discovered at the kraal. Daily digging had reportedly been ongoing since.

Nevhuhulwi added that the suspects would appear in the Springs Magistrate’s Court today.
