Springs residents clean overgrown strip near Presidents Dam

Frustrated by inaction, residents near Presidents Dam have used their own money to clear the overgrown strip.

Residents of Presidents Dam in Springs have taken matters into their own hands and cleaned up the median strip on Paul Kruger Road from the Springs Mining Museum to Cowles Street. The strip is being cleaned by eight people.

Speaking to the Springs Advertiser, the spokesperson for the residents, who wished to remain anonymous, said they had reported the overgrown strip to the City of Ekurhuleni’s head of parks in Springs, but nothing had been done.

That is when, as a collective, they decided to contribute from their own pockets and find people; some residents helped with the equipment.

“Our main concern as residents is that the overgrown grass is now on the road where many cars pass daily and may cause an accident.

“Passing this strip on a daily basis and seeing its condition was very heartbreaking and we still love our town despite the lack of service delivery by the city and this is one of the ways to show our love,” said the spokesperson.

He said that when he asked the head of parks to do something about the strip, he was told there was no PPE, no uniforms, no manpower, and no petrol to complete the job.

He also said that the city thanked them when they said they would do the job out of their own pockets.

“When the blue tank was put up by the city, there was a board saying ‘beautification entrance of Springs,’ but how will people see the beauty if it is not maintained by them?” asked the spokesperson.

Comment is awaited from the CoE.
