Armed robbery suspect caught after chase in Springs
A 23-year-old man was arrested by the EMPD after an armed robbery. He is facing charges for possession of an imitation firearm
The EMPD arrested a 23-year-old man for robbery on Main Reef Road in Springs on February 20.
According to the EMPD, officers were conducting their duties when they were approached by a woman who had just been robbed at gunpoint.
“The suspects were reportedly driving a white Ford Figo and had taken the victim’s backpack,” the EMPD said.
Officers immediately responded and located the vehicle.
“During an attempt to flee, the suspect’s vehicle collided with another car at the corner of Orpiment and Main Reef roads.
“The first suspect, who was the driver, managed to jump out of the vehicle and escape. The second suspect, who was seated in the front passenger seat, was apprehended on the scene,” the EMPD said.

The EMPD added that upon searching the vehicle, officers recovered the victim’s backpack and a firearm used during the robbery, which was found next to the passenger seat.
The suspect is reported to have sustained minor injuries during the collision, and he was transported to Far East Rand Hospital for medical assessment.
“After being declared fit for detention, he was detained at the Springs Police Station and is facing charges for possession of an imitation firearm,” the EMPD said.
