Long-serving member takes the lead at Springs Striders
After more than 30 years with Springs Striders, Karin Smith is giving back by stepping into the role of chairperson with a vision to grow an inclusive and community-driven club.
Karin Smith has been appointed as the new chairperson of Springs Striders Athletics Club.
After being part of the more than 30 years, Karin says she felt a strong sense of responsibility to
give back as the club has given her years if joy.
“The club has given me so much, and stepping into this role felt like a natural way to contribute and help shape its future,” she said.
She says she initially joined the club because of her love of running and the desire to be part of something bigger herself.
“Very quickly, it became about the people – the sense of camaraderie, the shared goals and the encouragement. It felt like home from early on,” Karin said.

Over the years, she has witnessed the club evolve and grow from a traditional running group into a diverse and inclusive community.
“We’ve seen improvements in organisation, communication and access to events, especially with technology playing a role.
“What has had the biggest impact is the shift towards supporting runners at all levels: not just performance but participation, wellness, and belonging,” Karin said.
She added that although races are always memorable, the people are what really count.
“Moments like finishing tough races together, standing at the start line with nervous excitement and celebrating milestones like Comrades finishes or personal bests really stand out.

“I also remember the quieter moments, including club runs where friendships were built and the incredible support when someone was struggling. Those shared experiences are what make this club truly special,” she said.
She shared her vision for the future is to keep the club inclusive and community-driven.
“I’d like to see us grow our membership, especially bringing in younger runners, while still honouring the loyalty of long-standing members,” Karin said.
Karin shared that after more than 30 years, this club is more than just a running club, but a part of who she is.
“It represents friendship and personal growth. It has been there through different seasons of my life, and that makes it incredibly meaningful to me.
“It’s an honour to serve a club that has given me so much, and I look forward to continuing this journey together with all our members,” she concluded.
