Long-time bingo master keeps spirits high at Springs Club

Members of the Springs Senior Citizens Club gathered for a fun bingo session, highlighting the joy it brings to seniors.

The Springs Senior Citizen Club members met for the monthly bingo session on April 7. Despite small attendance by members due to Easter, the attendees had a blast during the session.

Speaking to the Springs Advertiser, Bessie Smit, who has been the bingo master for over 15 years, said that seeing people happy when their numbers are called has brought her joy over the years.

She explained that she became a bingo master after the people who previously ran the bingo moved away. Before that, Smit sold the tickets to the bingo participants.

“For the old people to get out just for a bingo morning means a lot to them. They just love to play.

“And I don’t read too fast, and I try to read clearly. They can manage me in how I call the numbers out,” shared Smit.

She expressed that seeing the growth of the sessions over the last five years has been amazing, especially after the Covid pandemic, when the club had fewer than 20 people attending the sessions.

She said that being a bingo master came easily to her, as she considers herself a people person.

“Being part of bingo allows people to create friendships and be able to learn from people who are from different cultures and backgrounds,” concluded Smit.
