Dog forced to drag 4.2kg chain sparks outrage in Springs
A dog forced to drag a heavy chain in Springs has caused outrage with the SPCA calling the treatment clear cruelty and urging the public to report abuse.
The Springs SPCA has raised the alarm after a distressing case involving a dog found running around in Largo while dragging a 4.2kg chain.
The society has strongly condemned the use of chains on animals, noting that the practice is illegal.
Springs SPCA manager Annecia le Roux described the severity of the situation.
“We weighed her at just 19.8kg. This means she was forced to drag more than 20% of her own body weight just to take a single step,” she said.
Le Roux pointed out that the Animal Protection Act makes it a criminal offence to confine or restrain an animal in a manner that causes unnecessary suffering.
“This was more than suffering; this was cruelty. The Springs SPCA does not and will never tolerate the chaining of animals.

“Depriving a sentient being of its basic freedom to move violates the five freedoms we are committed to protecting,” she added.
She stressed that pet owners must ensure their dogs have access to a secure, fenced area where they can move freely.
Addressing the community, Le Roux urged residents not to ignore such situations.
“If you see an animal living like this, chained, burdened with heavy weights, and unable to move freely, please do not stay silent. You are their voice,” she said.
She also called on the public to report animal cruelty immediately by contacting the Springs SPCA on 082 668 5230 or via email at manager@spcasprings.co.za
