East Rand rapper focused on inspiring listeners through authentic music

East Rand hip-hop and trap artist Smokie23 is using his music to deliver powerful messages, inspire others and share his life experiences through every verse.

Keenan Johnson (27), better known by his stage name Smokie23, is steadily making his mark in the local music scene with his unique blend of hip-hop and trap.

Keenan’s passion for music started with dance before evolving into a career behind the microphone.

His inspiration for music stems from his family, who motivated his desire to tell meaningful stories.

He officially began pursuing music in 2018 and took it seriously in 2020 after studying music production.

“My family motivates me every day. Believing in myself and staying focused on my goals has helped me continue growing as an artist,” he said.

Keenan gathered inspiration from iconic artists such as AKA, 2Pac and Trooppies. He aspired to work with Ziggy 4x, Kay Madusa, Priddy Prince and Maglara Doe Boy.

Keenan has worked hard and released songs such as Rest, Body Waist and God Knows. He describes his tracks as a reflection of his desire to communicate important messages through music.

“I want people to understand the message behind my songs and connect with what I’m saying,” he explained.

He is currently working on a new project titled Do The Most, Be The Most Because You Are The Most, which he plans to release later this year.

“Three standout tracks from the project include Achos, produced by Taylor Mahn, and 1,2,3s.

“Achos draws inspiration from local community culture, while 1,2,3s is a response to critics and doubters.

“The song is about proving people wrong and coming back stronger,” he said.

Beyond recording music, Keenan hopes to continue releasing more content and performing at events that will help him connect with wider audiences.

“My goal is for my music to give people a message and understanding. I want people to hear my story and see where I come from.

“My mission is to inspire others,” he cried.

As he continues to grow his brand and expand his reach, Keenan remains focused on delivering authentic music that resonates with listeners and leaves a lasting impact.
