Springs cricketer continues to chase new goals

Recently crowned Springs Old Boys’ Senior Cricketer of the Year, Clyde van Niekerk shares his love for the game and what continues to motivate him as a veteran player.

Springs has an abundance of local sporting talent, including cricketer Clyde van Niekerk, who was recently named Senior Cricketer of the Year at the Springs Old Boys prize-giving ceremony.

“Cricket has always been a part of his life, starting from a young age when he realised he had a talent for it.

“Being able to bowl and bat, playing with friends – the joy of performing is what drew me to the sport. The same thing today keeps me passionate and inspired, along with being able to keep fit,” he said.

He described his journey in the SOB club as memorable and inspirational.

“They have always had the ‘welcome with arms wide open’ policy, which has made the journey more pleasurable and enjoyable,” he said.

Clyde said that being surrounded by experienced coaches and players has made his cricketing journey all the more worthwhile.

“The club means a lot to me. Its structure and professionalism have made my experience a truly rewarding one,” he said.

He recalled the moment he was named the senior cricketer of the year.

“It was a big surprise as there are many talented senior cricketers in the club with both bat and ball. To be named senior cricket player of the year through the different formats meant that the hard work, practices and game time paid off,” Clyde said.

Clyde reflected on the memorable performances throughout the season.

“The most recent was taking four wickets in one of the prem games, thus helping the side to a very good victory,” he said proudly.

He described some of his setbacks as a senior player over 40, and how he tried to keep his body healthy and fit.

Despite this, Clyde does not let his setbacks deter him; instead, he uses his experience to stay motivated.

“It’s important to stay passionate, patient, and most importantly, not to put too much pressure on yourself. Learn to play with freedom knowing you have another game to perform and the results will follow,” he said.

Clyde emphasised the important role teammates and coaches have played throughout his cricketing journey.

“Teammates are vital as you spend a lot of time at practices and on the pitch with them. We play as a family. The encouragement as well as the ups and downs of one’s cricket journey are shared with teammates,” he said.

He added that coaches are equally important, helping players understand their roles and execute game plans effectively.

“Whether it’s batting, bowling or both, coaches teach you to know and play your role. They understand the game plan and help you execute it on match day,” he said.

Looking ahead, Clyde remains motivated to continue competing and improving his game.

“The beauty of cricket is that you are never too old to play. Veterans cricket is alive, competitive, and provides opportunities to grow and achieve if you perform,” he said.

One of his goals is to earn selection for the Eastern Veterans side, an achievement he considers a great honour.

“Being able to make the Eastern Veterans side one day is a huge motivation for me. That’s what drives me to keep working hard,” he said.

For aspiring young cricketers, Clyde believes dedication and patience are key to success.

“Work hard at practice and listen to your coaches. Go out and give 110% and the rewards will come. Stay patient, stay fit and most importantly, love and enjoy the game,” he advised.

Clyde hopes his journey and achievements will inspire others to pursue their sporting dreams.

“I want people to see the passion and love I have for the sport through my achievements and realise that anything is possible, no matter your age. Hard work pays off,” he said.
