Bakerton Primary School hosts ‘Walk to Read campaign’
Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Alice in Wonderland and the Minions were some of the characters teachers chose for their classes to dress up as.

On September 23, Bakerton Primary School hosted its ‘Walk to Read’ campaign for learners.
The campaign aimed to encourage and motivate learners about the importance and benefits of reading.
The learners, who came to school dressed up as their favourite book characters, embarked on a 2km walk within the Bakerton community, displaying their colourful and educational posters.
“The purpose of the event was to help our learners gain an interest in reading books, learn about the characters, and extract moral lessons from every story or novel,” said Grade Six teacher and event coordinator Samantha Rajaram.

“Not only did we want to show the learners that reading improves their vocabulary, but also for them to see that it’s a fun thing to do,” said Grade One teacher Thyron Chauke.
Among the school teachers who led the event with Rajaram were Zakiyya Matwadia and Sherita Beharie, who was involved in the sponsorship of the event.
“All our learners were so excited and enthusiastic about the day that they couldn’t wait to put all their efforts towards the programme.
“This event was to remind our learners that knowledge is power,” said Beharie.
