FOLLOW UP: CoE blames vandalism and cable theft for Main Reef Road street light failures in Springs

The City of Ekurhuleni has blamed persistent criminal activity and cable theft for non-functioning street lights on Main Reef Road, near the Ekurhuleni Fresh Produce Market.

The response follows reports last week highlighting safety concerns for motorists and residents, who reported criminal activity at the unlit intersection.

City of Ekurhuleni spokesperson Zweli Dlamini confirmed that vandalism and theft are the primary causes of the falling infrastructure.

“Vandalism and theft have significantly impacted the integrity and functionality of our street lighting infrastructure in various parts of the city.

“This issue has been an ongoing concern, and although we are actively repairing the affected lamp posts, recurring criminal activity makes it a persistent challenge,” Dlamini said.

To improve safety at the intersection following reported smash-and-grab incidents, the municipality plans to install a high mast light in the upcoming financial year.

Dlamini stated that 19 of the 39 lamp posts at the site have been cut down, while 20 are non-operational because of stolen cables.

“We are aware of the issues and are actively working to address them,” he said.

When asked if the municipality had received formal complaints, Dlamini said the issues had been logged, documented, and identified during routine maintenance programmes.

He added that workers previously welded poles to secure them and included the affected infrastructure on a fault list report, which prioritises repairs based on urgency and resources.

The municipality is also collaborating with the SAPS and law enforcement to bolster safety.

“The municipality has engaged our security company to patrol the area in the meantime. This measure aims to enhance safety while we work towards finding a permanent solution. We work very closely with the SAPS in our efforts to fight lawlessness,” he said.
