Armed hijacking at Springs home ends in shoot-out, one suspect killed
A man was hijacked at gunpoint outside his home, triggering a chase and shoot-out that left one suspect dead and another injured.
A 33-year-old man was hijacked at gunpoint at his home in Springs Extension on April 28.
According to Springs police spokesperson Sergeant Charity Zwane, the victim had stopped in front of the residence and then stepped out of his vehicle to open the gate while it was idling.
“An unknown man approached him and pointed a firearm at his head. The suspect demanded the complainant’s cellphone and instructed him to lie down on the ground,” she said.
Zwane explained that the victim told the suspect that all of their belongings were inside the vehicle and then shouted for assistance.
“A person came out of the house, prompting the suspect to enter the complainant’s vehicle and drive off. A second vehicle, described as a Toyota Corolla, followed the hijacked vehicle,” Zwane said.

She adds that private security responded and pursued the suspects.
“During the chase, shots were fired. The Toyota Corolla came to a stop, while the hijacked vehicle continued fleeing the scene.
“The driver of the Toyota Corolla sustained a gunshot wound to the upper body, and another suspect was fatally wounded. The Toyota Corolla was identified as an e-hailing vehicle,” Zwane said.
One of the suspects was declared dead at the scene, while the injured suspect was transported to hospital for medical treatment under police guard.
“The hijacked vehicle had a tracker and was recovered in Kwa-Thema,” Zwane said.
