Springs residents march over illegal immigration, unemployment and service delivery

Residents marched through Springs, calling on authorities and businesses to prioritise South African citizens.

Residents took to the streets of Springs today (June 30) in protest over illegal immigration, and the impact on employment opportunities.

The protest was led by the president of Afrika Mayibuye Youth Movement, Keamogetswe Masike.

“We are here as a result of the demands of South Africans. We are here to say enough is enough,” he said.

One of the protestors, Thuli Dlamini from Hollywood informal settlement, raised the issue of unemployment.

“We don’t have jobs and our community is underdeveloped. We are marching to raise this issue,” she said.

Bandile Nkosi shared similar sentiments lamenting the lack of jobs and medical facilities in the settlement.

“I would like to see our community improving, for us to get housing, clinics and crèches for our children,” Nkosi said.

Mandla Mnyazama alleged that cheap labour has worsened the unemployment rate.

The demonstrators are planning to hand in a memorandum that details their grievances on July 1.

Law enforcement was on the scene monitoring the situation. No violence was reported and no arrests were made.
