Fierce & Furry Throwdown raises funds for Springs SPCA

More than 120 athletes and 60 volunteers came together to support the Springs SPCA during the inaugural Fierce & Furry Throwdown.

The Springs SPCA joined forces with Born Fierce Functional Fitness to host the inaugural Fierce & Furry Throwdown, bringing together athletes, volunteers and community members for a day of fitness and fundraising.

The event featured doubles and relay teams competing in a series of workouts, with participants completing nine “zoomies” runs before each of the nine workout stations.

Springs SPCA chairperson Nicky Meiring said the primary aim of the event was to raise funds while creating a fun community experience.

“We also gave away a ski-erg to the facility that entered the most teams and donated the most dog food. RPS Centre collected 1 086kg of food,” she said.

The collaboration with Born Fierce Functional Fitness has been built over several years.

“We have been partners for many years, and we have done many events together over the past few years, including FierceRox about two years ago. This event would not have been possible without the Born Fierce tribe,” Meiring said.

The event attracted close to 60 teams, equating to about 120 athletes, while around 60 volunteers helped ensure the day ran smoothly.

“We were very satisfied with the turnout. The community showed up as always,” said Meiring.

She said the fundraiser not only provided much-needed financial support for the SPCA but also raised awareness of its work.

“We benefited financially and, of course, got exposure. Our aim is always to show people that we work really hard to generate our income while keeping it fun and involving the community.

“Gaining supporters and trust within the community is very important.”

Meiring described the enthusiasm of participants and volunteers as one of the day’s biggest highlights.

“There were so many highlights, but the amount of athletes that showed up and poured their hearts out on the field was amazing to see.

“I was also blown away by the support from our sponsors and volunteers that show up time and time again and assist with whatever we throw at them.”

Following the success of the inaugural event, the Springs SPCA is already preparing for the next Fierce & Furry Throwdown, which will take place at Hugenote on December 5.
