In a major boost for the local economy, the Springs Taxi Association has announced a digital overhaul of its operations.

On July 22, the association officially launched its new cashless transit system, completely powered and supported by fintech partner Waxd through the rollout of the Waxd Taxi App.

This local initiative is designed to directly benefit Springs commuters, drivers, and taxi owners by tackling safety concerns, eliminating cash-handling hassles, and bringing modern financial technology straight to the local ranks.

By transforming a driver’s smartphone into a secure ‘Tap ’n Go’ payment terminal, local commuters will now be able to pay for their trips using any major credit or debit card, including SASSA cards.

For the association’s taxi owners, the platform introduces unprecedented business oversight, offering real-time vehicle tracking, digital income monitoring, and daily automated payouts.

Chairman of the Springs Taxi Association, Simon Ngwenya, said that as an association, they are taking charge of the future and bringing the digital revolution straight to the ranks of Springs.

“On July 22, we are making a definitive shift away from the risks of a cash-heavy operation.

“The Waxd Taxi App gives our local owners total visibility over their fleets and ensures our drivers and passengers are safer. This is about professionalising our local industry and giving Springs the modern, secure transport system it deserves.”

Beyond day-to-day safety, the transition provides an immense boost to the business side of local operations.

Historically, taxi owners have struggled to access formal financing due to a lack of financial paperwork.

By creating a secure digital record of daily earnings through the Waxd platform, local operators can now easily demonstrate their turnover to financial institutions, unlocking long-overdue access to bank credit, vehicle financing, and formal business insurance.

To ensure every local operator can participate, the association has streamlined the onboarding process. Springs owners and drivers can quickly upload their vehicle permits, IDs, and banking details via the app, with local verification completed within 24 to 48 hours.

“This rollout proves that the Springs Taxi Association is leading from the front.

“We aren’t just changing how people pay for their local trips; we are upgrading the economic foundation of our businesses.

“The hard work and hustle that built this association remain, but we are now winning with technology that protects our people and grows our businesses,” concludes Ngwenya.
