UPDATE: Welgedacht Road cleared after protest

A protest over electricity problems has ended peacefully, with Welgedacht Road now open to traffic.

Welgedacht Road has been cleared and traffic flow restored following a protest over electricity issues.

According to the EMPD, the crowd dispersed peacefully after a delegate from the Executive Mayor’s Office engaged with the community.

The protest had earlier resulted in the road being barricaded with burning tyres and stones, following electricity problems linked to a mini-substation that overloaded and caught fire.
